Dr. Christopher Thurber: “Cracking Boys’ Secret Code”
Monday, November 14, 2022
Program 7:00 to 8:00 p.m., book signing 8:00-8:30 p.m.
Free and open to the public
Parents and professional educators instinctively propose solutions to boys who come to them seeking help with problems or challenges. This well-intentioned gesture tends to backfire for two reasons: boys typically have valid solutions of their own, and they detest being told what to do. In this pragmatic workshop, participants will learn how to use their receptive and expressive language skills to decode the subtext of what students are saying and respond with genuine empathy. The resulting interpersonal connection forms the foundation upon which all effective parenting, teaching, and mentoring rest.
Attendees will come away from this presentation with practical guidance on affirming boys' identities and on strengthening boys' connections with each other and with trusted adults. Dr. Thurber will also highlight strategies from his newest book that help caregivers boost their student's achievement and mental health by applying healthy pressure, modeling perseverance, and mining failures for nuggets of wisdom. Only by teaching kids to fail can we ensure their success in life!
Dr. Christopher Thurber is an award-winning writer and thought leader who has dedicated his professional life to improving how adults care for kids and to enhancing the experience of young people.
